Seven eager volunteers from the STARability Trailblazer Academy arrived at the St. Matthew’s House warehouse at 9:30 in the morning.

The volunteers spent 90 minutes bagging rice to deliver to families through the St. Matthew’s House food distributions.

Madison McNally, Program Director of Trailblazer Academy, explained that each day they focus on a vocational skill activity, an educational activity and a recreational activity. Being able to get out in the community allows the participants to not only see new environments and learn new skills but feel good about giving back.

One of the volunteers, Caitlin Roggia, was all smiles from the moment she arrived. Though she’d never done this job before she said she was excited to learn something new and be able to help.

Lorna McLain, Food Assistance Manager at St. Matthew’s House, was grateful for the hard work of the volunteers. “They’re learning life skills, and at the same time they’re helping us feed the community, so it’s a great partnership.”

The volunteers were able to fill over 400 bags of rice which will be given out over the next couple weeks as part of the mobile food distributions run by St. Matthew’s House.
