The Food Donation Improvement Act is headed to Congress, and St. Matthew’s House is hoping it gets passed.
Lorna McLain, Director of Food Assistance, said that the need for food assistance has doubled this year. This much is apparent as our food distributions have rapidly grown and aren’t slowing down any time soon.
This increased need means that either our budget must increase in order to meet it or our donations coming in must increase. This is where the Food Donation Improvement Act comes in.
At a local level, this Act would encourage people to more readily recover and donate food to places (like St. Matthew’s House) that can then distribute it to those in need. With more people donating their leftover food to our pantry, it cuts down on the money we have to spend on buying food while also providing a more unique assortment of food to distribute.
