1. Decide when you'd like to hold your drive. Although the holidays are a popular time of year, essentials are needed year-round. You might consider holding a drive in late summer when supplies are especially low. Hosting a themed food or school supplies drive, such as a kid-friendly collection for back-to-school time or a cereal food drive is a great idea.
2. Decide how long to hold your drive. Will it be one day, a week, or a month? Or perhaps this is an ongoing effort? It's entirely up to you.
3. Do you want to collect food and/or money? We need both! We don't receive any government support, and depend entirely upon individual and group financial donations.
4. Create a secure donation collection container for your group to use to collect money donations.
5. Create posters to advertise your drive. Be sure to include all the important details: date, time, drop off location and that the drive will benefit St. Matthew's House. You can also let people know about your drive through email, Facebook, Twitter, etc.
6. Distribute a preferred food/items list for people to donate. Download a copy of the St. Matthew's House Donations Wish List here or visit our Current Needs page for an updated list of urgently needed items.
7. Host your drive and give it plenty of support.
- Email your co-workers, friends and neighbors to rally support.
- Contact the local papers to let them know about your food drive.
- Put it in local newsletters, bulletins and websites to rally support.
- Set a goal and monitor the progress.
- Hold a contest between departments, classes, troops, etc. to see who can raise the most. Offer incentives for those who contribute the most to your drive.
8. If you collect a large amount of items we can send one of our trucks to pick up the donations. Simply call us at 239-774-0500 to schedule the pickup.
9. All items can be dropped off at the kitchen/donation entrance at St. Matthew's House. This door is on your immediate left when you turn into our parking lot off Glades Blvd. The entrance is clearly marked for donations, which can be dropped off any day from 7 am to 4 pm. Please ask for a donation receipt if one is not offered. All donations to St. Matthew's House are tax-deductible.
